Crop Circles

An oasis in the middle of a food desert.

Bringing healthy food to those in underserved areas.

Food desert: an urban area with no access to fresh food within one mile or a rural area with no access to fresh food within 10 miles. Food deserts plague more than 23 million annually across every major city in the US, and they’re creating a health challenge unlike anything our country has ever seen.

In an effort to bring more attention to this rising epidemic, Tessemae’s and its partners are executing pop-up farmers’ markets in the heart of underserved areas nationwide. We’re calling the initiative “Crop Circles” and working to bring local residents free fresh produce during these daylong events.

Food desert facts:

  • 23.5 million US citizens live in food deserts
  • 13.5 million of those citizens live in lower income areas
  • Tend to have 1/3 fewer grocery stores and 3x the number of fast food restaurants
  • Report the highest levels of obesity and diabetes

We can do better.

As part of the Crop Circles initiative, Tessemae’s and other organizations are creating “pop-up markets” (complete with live music, local celebrities, and more!) where people can take home FREE bags of fresh produce. Our first event was held in Compton, CA, second in Chicago, IL, and were bringin' it to Oakland, CA in early 2017. We can’t wait to see where it goes from there. Crop Circles is our way of giving underserved communities the opportunity to eat food as it was intended. It’s how we’re helping them taste what matters.
